Atmosphere - week 5 - Mid latitude weather systems

screenshot and hyperlink to Atmosphere resource

This is an example of an exciting session with insights into the main drivers and influences on weather systems in mid-latitudes. As the UK is a mid-latitude country, this particular session will provide insights to the weather that we experience every day.

Mid-latitudes are dominated by a near-constant interplay of warm, cold, moist and dry air masses of varying origins and this explains why we experience frequent changes in weather in the UK and in other mid-latitude locations. This session therefore provides the participant with a key level of understanding of weather systems in the mid-latitudes of planet earth.

Earth surface processes - week 4 - Glacier formation

This is an example of an exciting session examining the formation and impacts of glaciers. Glaciers begin to form when there is so much snowfall and/or the air temperature is so cold that some of the snow survives through the summer and is still present when the next winter’s snowfall arrives. Eventually if this occurs several years in a row, a body of ice is formed under the snowfield and we have a glacier.

Glacier processes have been key mechanisms which have shaped the landmass of planet earth in the past and continue to do so in the present. They have carved out huge valleys through mountain ranges and scoured and changed the land over thousands of square kilometres. This session therefore examines this key process in the shaping of our landscape.

Tourism - week 10 - green tourism

This is an example of an exciting session examining green tourism in its various forms. The session will consider just why the introduction and implementation of green tourism is so important on a global scale. Green tourism is a global industry that seeks to have a minimal impact on the environment in the regions where tourists visit.

Green tourism is also about respecting local cultures and ensuring that communities receiving tourists benefit from the tourism pound and so benefits are retained locally. This session therefore investigates the opportunities and barriers within this segment of the tourism industry.

Employability - week 8 - Use of social media

This is an example of an exciting session examining the use of social media in education and its use as a collaborative tool for student groups. Social media literacy is becoming a key employability skill demanded by employers worldwide as social media becomes a key business tool used by businesses to reach and engage with their customers. Social media is often used in education to help student groups develop social learning networks within which they can access peer support as they progress through their course and this session examines how this might be done.

Social media is also examined with regard to its potential to enable students to create knowledge through participation and reflection. This session therefore examines the uses and attractiveness of using social media within Higher Education.

Global Environmental Change – week 1 – Environment in Crisis

screenshot and hyperlink to GEC resource

This is an example of an opening session asking the topical question whether the global environment is in crisis or not. In seeking an answer this session will go on to provide an initial overview of the many issues which the module will examine in further detail.

The module will engage participants in the wide range of apparently compelling evidence which suggests that global environments are experiencing severe stress and degradation. This session therefore asks a key question which will be followed-up throughout the course – is the environment in crisis?

Urban & Rural Geography – week 10 – Protecting the Countryside from Urban Sprawl

This is an example of an informative and key knowledge session based on policies and approaches both historically and more recently in the UK, designed to halt the spread of urban growth in to the countryside. This is a topical and controversial subject area and fundamental to modern geography studies. Greenbelt policy has had a significant influence on the geography of the urban periphery.

The session examines greenbelt policy and its aims and objectives as well as seeking to understand the underlying issues which result in counter-urbanisation and rural-urban migration and their respective consequences.

Overview of Energy Use – session 10 – Alternative Energy: Solar Power

screenshot and hyperlink to URG resource

This is an example of a very topical learning resource providing insights into the technologies which are capturing solar energy and converting it to a useable form for domestic and commercial use in modern 21st century society. As nations across the globe look into alternatives to fossil fuels to generate energy and mitigate climate change, solar power is one of the leading technologies providing much potential, even in mid-latitude countries such as the UK.

Ultimately, solar power is a benign technology often unobtrusive and built into roof designs, its operations give off no harmful emissions and the manufacture of solar panels involves no dangerous materials or techniques. With only minimal servicing, installations are expected to have a working life of 25-35 years.

Introduction to Physical Geography – session 2 – Earth Formation

screenshot and hyperlink to IPG resource

This resource is an example of a stimulating session on physical geography which seeks to provide key insights into the formation of the universe, solar system and the Earth. This content will provide the background and understanding to how plate tectonics and volcanoes work. In this sense it is a key building block of our knowledge and studies in helping us understand how the physical systems of planet Earth work and ultimately our place in the universe, living on the ‘blue planet’.

Introduction to Sustainable Development – session 2 – Key Issues in Sustainable Development Studies

screenshot and hyperlink to ISD resource

Sustainable development is an increasingly fundamental concept within the study of geography. As human influences on the planet’s biosphere grow ever more extensive, the importance of understanding the emerging social, environmental and economic issues increases. Key concepts are explored and insights provided within the context of global population growth and increasing resource demands.
