Shade loving Convallaria majalis (lily of the valley) is planted under the shelter of the pergola and its covering of Rosa ‘Kiftsgate’ around the base of the rock. The planting around features like this anchors them to the ground visually and makes them look like they have been there for a long time.

Contrasting colours of foliage create areas of interest even when there are few flowers in the garden. The purple foliage of the Corylus maxima ‘Purpurea’ (purple hazel) contrast with the green foliage of the shrub roses in front.
