MWD

The following are general facts about MWD:

  • MWD allows the driller to 'Steer' the BHA to follow a planned trajectory.
  • The instruments in the BHA tell him direction, inclination and toolface.
  • The instruments are powered by batteries or a mud turbine
  • The data is converted to binary and transmitted up a hole by shutting and opening a mud valve.
  • The pressure shocks represent 1s and 0s and are measured at surface for conversion to data.
