Introduction

This resource is designed to prepare a range of professionals for their role as placement supervisors for students within their workplace setting. The materials will prepare individuals to explore and apply principles of supervision, work-based learning and assessment within their practice settings.

Candidates will gain valuable knowledge and skills required to fulfil their supervisory role confidently and effectively.

Learning outcomes:

Define the role of the placement supervisor and the process of supervision
Discuss the importance of essential supervisory skills
Identify key aspects of, and the underpinning ethos of, an effective learning environment
Apply learning and teaching strategies to ensure effective learning experiences and the opportunity to achieve competencies required by the programme of study
Apply principles of effective feedback and assessment
Contribute to the informal and formal evaluation of the learning experience

Workbook	Title	Description
1	The supervisory process	This initial workbook introduces the purpose and importance of work placements. It considers the role and the responsibilities of the placement supervisor.
2	Effective working relationships	This workbook looks at the importance of the supervisor/student relationship and the key characteristics and skills of effective supervision. It also looks at the need for equality and consistency of the student experience.
3	Providing an effective learning experience	Workbook three considers ways to help ensure that your workplace is an effective learning environment. It also looks at the different stages of placement and the associated processes that help make the learning journey a positive experience.
4	Facilitating learning	This workbook gives a basic overview of the different types of learning that may take place during placement and the role of the supervisor in facilitating learning.
5	Assessment and feedback	Workbook five looks at the purpose, the importance and the principles of effective feedback.
6	Evaluating the placement experience	This final workbook covers the importance of evaluating the placement experience and discusses potential strategies that can be used to evaluate the student placement.
