The extent of ecotourism

In its purest sense, ecotourism is an industry that claims to have a minimal impact on the environment and local culture. Yet according to Hall and Page (2010) one of the biggest problems facing the industry is from crowding due to a lack of limits being placed on ecotourists visiting natural areas.

This phenomenon is closely linked to notions of social carrying capacity in wilderness and natural areas. It is not technically about density, but more about the experience and the potential impairment of quality through encountering more and more people (ibid). Tourists generally seek to visit wilderness areas to escape others and appreciate the peace and quiet and natural beauty to be experienced.
